A How-To Guide to be a Credit Union Rockstar

The credit union industry is FULL of amazing professionals both inside and outside of the credit union brick and mortar branches.  Most all of them share a deep love for credit unions and for helping people – their employees and members alike. Being a leader and a trailblazer requires being a cut above the rest.

What do these leaders have in common?  They:

Dream big.  It isn’t enough for these professionals to punch their timecards each day.  They have big dreams for their lives and their credit union position helps support those dreams.  Dreaming big in one area of life benefits all areas of your life and leaders have big goals for themselves.

Mentor others.  The main job of a leader is to create other leaders and they make sure to spot and foster talent in those around them to help them excel in their careers and lives.

Innovate and try new things.  The successful businesses and leaders inside and outside of the credit union space haven’t blazed trails by doing what everyone else has done, going only down well-worn paths of those before them.  They listen to their intuition and thoughtfully invest resources in new ideas, constantly innovating current processes and systems in order to maximize success.

Hire people who are smarter than them.  This makes them look even smarter and even better leaders.  Not only that, but they realize they aren’t and don’t have to be perfect at everything.  They delegate/outsource their “weaknesses” so they can focus on what they are most passionate about and what they are best at doing.

Prioritize what’s most important.  It’s the old Pareto 80/20 rule – 20% of your efforts are going to make 80% of the impact.  Great leaders know the things that make the most impact and spend their time on those tasks and projects.

Communicate fabulously.  Whether they are representing their credit union, writing an email or speaking with one of their colleagues, what they say is thoughtful and articulate.  This helps them have great and more fulfilling interpersonal relationships both inside and outside of the office.

Never stop learning.  These trailblazers take every opportunity to continue learning so they are forever a student of their profession.  This helps with idea generation, open-mindedness, and collaboration with others.
